BIGGEST LOSER FINAL

The final of the Biggest Loser was held in the Monageer Tavern on Saturday the 5th March.  After all was weighed the winning team of Ballycarrigeen led by Niall O Loughlin was announced with Declan Kelly leading his team in to second position.  A total of 1600 kg in total was lost.  Well done to Niall and all his team mates.

Also on the night Josephine O Dowd won the individual weight loss by beating 42 others who weighed in at the start.  Well done Josephine.

Also thanks to all the other leaders without them the show would not go on.  Also thanks to the landowners for the use of the land for the bog run, Jim & Josie Gahan, Ted Nolan and Danny Murphy, to all the drivers, stewards, water ladies, tea and sandwich makers, photographers,  Eithne and Daire Turner for the use of their premises, Seamus and Mary Canavan for the use of their premises and all the people who supported their leaders.  Without all of you the Biggest Loser would not happen.

We now have a year to prepare for next year and any new ideas would be welcome.  Remember we will be looking for leaders next December again and if you fancy yourself as the Biggest Loser and would like to lead your townsland to Glory, let us know.

Community First Responder

Community First Responder Group

On March 6th the newly formed Monageer Community First Responder group are planning on having a public meeting in the hall in Monageer at 7pm. A representative from the National Ambulance Service and the Irish Heart Foundation will attend on the night to present to parishioners on the need for a Community First Responder (CFR) group and how this can be set up.

Why do we need a CFR group in our area?

In Ireland 5000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest annually that’s approx 14 per day. 77% of these cardiac arrests happen in the home in front of a loved one. By someone commencing CPR immediately; the victim’s chances of survival double. The first 8 minutes are crucial for survival, for every minute without CPR or defibrillation the victims chances of survival decrease by 10% per minute. CPR and AED use are very simple skills and can be taught during a short course. We are well aware in rural Ireland that it is not possible to have an ambulance in the majority of cases at the victim’s side in the 8 minute period. In the last few years there has been a surge in community groups setting up these CFR groups, and many have saved the lives of their neighbours friends and family.  Once the scheme is up and running two responders will be on call at all times for any cardiac event, the responders will be alerted by the NAS when a 999 call comes in from our area. This in turn means that our community will be a much safer area to live in. Following this meeting a committee will be elected. All training will be provided.

If you would like to be involved with the group as a Responder, Fundraiser, Admin or just interested in the concept please attend our inaugural meeting.

If you need further information please contact Brigid Sinnott 087 6826336 or Jean Mernagh 087 6109358. Thank you
