Farewell to Shane
Monageer/Boolavogue GAA and community are deeply saddened and in a state of shock at the untimely death of Shane Fenlon, who lost his battle with Cancer on Monday 18th June. It’s very difficult to make any sense of Shane’s death, a young and talented hurler always in a good humour and full of life, will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Shane represented Monageer/Boolavogue with pride at both hurling and football for many years. He made significant contributions to some of the clubs great success over the years and for this we are very grateful.
Shane is being waked in his home place in Ballymurtagh from 11am today (Tuesday 19th June). Funeral mass is on Wednesday 20th at 1pm in St.Patrick’s church in Monageer, leaving the house at 12:15pm. Flowers from family members only and donations to the Hospice Home Care are very welcomed by his family.

Nice tribute to the late Frank Rath
The untimely death of Monageer native Frank Rath, resident at Ballintlea in Barntown, at the age of 63, has deprived Wexford and Ireland of a leading agriculturalist.
The large attendance at Trinity church in Monageer who attended the funeral reflected the respect and high esteem in which he was held. A graduate of UCD, Frank from Avonbeg was well known through his career in the Teagasc advisory service and as an inspector with the Department of Agriculture. He specialised in farm finances after taking a masters degree in agricultural economics in 1979 under the direction of Professor Seamus Sheehy.
Based for a while at the Teagasc regional office in Kildalton, he made an outstanding contribution during the 1980s as a front line advisor to farmers affected by the burden of debt and high interest rates. In 1990 he became an inspector with the Department of Agriculture, moving in due course to Johnstown Castle.
In Johnstown, he was chief architect of the REPS programme, in which about 60,000 farmers enrolled. Under his guidance REPS (the rural environment protection scheme), which was launched in 1994, not only became a channel for millions of euro in EU grant aid and protected the environment.
The deceased was a man of vision, an excellent communicator blessed with a practical approach to his job. His intelligence, expertise and insight grained him an international reputation and he advised several of the newer EU member states as they in turn set up similar schemes.
While he was stationed in Kildalton, Frank met his future wife Hannah O’Mahony, who was a colleague working on socio-economic matters. They married in the Honan Chapel at UCC in Hannah’s native Cork and the couple shared 22 happy years together.
Although not resident in Monageer in recent years, he always retained his interest in local affairs, especially the parish GAA club, of which he was a trustee.
An accomplished fiddle player in his youth, he won national honours as a member of his local Macra na Feirme branch’s Gaelic cabaret team. He also represented Wexford Macra in an All-Ireland winning quiz team.
Frank is greatly missed by his loving wife, his brothers and sisters and extended family.

Best wishes and get well soon for Shane Fenlon
We’d like to extend best wishes and a speedy recovery to Shane, who is currently in St. James Hospital Dublin.
Shane has played with Monageer/Boolavogue (and Wexford) since he was a nipper and will be sorely missed on the playing field, while he is recovering.
Get well soon Shane from all at Monageer/Boolavogue GAA.

Free CPR training completed
Thanks to Brigid Sinnott who gave a free CPR training course to 12 people last week. The training is invaluable and we would recommend everyone involved with teams try and avail of the next course. We better ask Brigid nicely first though !

Thanks to local Fas group for their recent litter collection
We would like to say well done to the local Fás group for their recent litter collection. 300-400 bags of litter were collected along the roads of Monageer over the last two weeks in various different locations. We would also like to praise the local residents who helped with this clean up and who are constantly picking litter off the roads. It is hoped that this practice could continue into the future and we would like to take this opportunity to encourage people to get involved in in looking after their local area and if you would like to do so please contact the Fás Office who will provide assistance.
