Under 12’s Report on Final of St John’s Volunteers Hurling Mini All Ireland
Under 12- Monageer/Boolavogue V’s St Anne’s in Final of St John’s Volunteers Mini All Ireland Hurling Tournament on Sunday 11th May.
Final Score St Anne’s 0-3 Monageer/Boolavogue 0-1
This was a game where both defences dominated the game from the start with very little if any scorable chances coming for either side. The score line definitely did not reflect the intensity and work rate of both teams in what was a very enjoyable game.
Right from the start it was very obvious that the St Anne’s defence was very strong as M/B had to shoot from distance and tried in vain to get on the scoreboard. Good efforts from Eoin Gahan and Darren Kelly fell short of the posts and were cleared back up the pitch and an excellent long puck from Ronan O’Leary just went wide of the posts for Monageer/Boolavogue. St Anne’s were first on the scoreboard with a point against the strong wind. Conor Dolan for MB then took a shot at goal but was stopped by the excellent St Anne’s Goalie who put in an excellent performance throughout the game. Minutes later Conor Dolan got M/B’s only point of the game to bring the teams level. Just before half time Ronan O’Leary for MB struck off his bad side from distance and was on target except for the wind took it wide of the post. MB were by far the strongest team in the first half but had failed to covert the hard work into scores due to St Anne’s robust defence.
The start of the second half was all St Anne’s as they piled on the pressure on the Monageer/Boolavogue defence but excellent work by M/B’s Tadgh Maher, Patrick Redmond, Ronan O’Leary and Ruairí Leacy in Goal left St Anne’s struggling to score despite many efforts at goals and points. Patrick Redmond from Boolavogue took a severe blow to his leg but persevered through the pain to continue playing. St Anne’s eventually scored from a free after 8 minutes in. This left MB a point down and they lifted their game and fought hard to get on the scoreboard again. St Anne’s scored another point against the run of play which left Monageer/Boolavogue needing a goal to win and they nearly did with quick thinking by Ronan O’Leary dropping the sliotar to foot to kick for goal which went just wide of the left post. Conor Dolan had a shot on for goal but an excellent hook by a St Anne’s defender put an end to that effort also. The game ended St Annes 0-3 Monageer/Boolavogue 0-1. While the MB players and Mentors were disappointed they can hold their heads high as they won 4 out of 5 games in the tournament and put in a very strong final performance. Monageer/Boolavogue GAA club wish to thank St. John’s Volunteers for inviting them to the tournament.
Team Ruairí Leacy (Goalie), Tadgh Maher, James Mernagh, Dylan Brady, Alan O’Neill, Patrick Redmond, Ronan O’Leary, Darren Kelly, Conor Dolan 0-1, Eoin Gahan, Jim Gahan, TJ Breen, Jason Breen, Eoin Dolan, Daniel Rooney, Colm Dickinson.

Monageer/Boolavogue 2-10 Faythe Harriers 2-11
Our junior hurlers made the trip to Parc Charman on Sunday and were unlucky to suffer defeat in a well contested game. With wind advantage in the opening half we led at half time by 1-8 to 1-3 having dominated proceedings, with David Breen getting the goal. Our fowards also created another three clear goal chances but they were all missed and it left the Harriers in a game that should have been wrapped up. The second half proved more difficult against the strong wind and the Harriers eventually went ahead with 10 minutes left. Niall O’Loughlin then scored a great goal, but the Harriers went ahead again with time running out. David Breen won a free in with time up, but unfortunately Ed Rowesome’s could not find the range with the last puck of the game from 70 metres, for what would have been a deserved draw. Best on the day were Conal Nolan, Sean McCabe, Paddy Walsh in defence, Foster Lacey and Larry Murphy held sway in midfield and up front David Breen and Niall O’Loughlin were best. Team; Morgan Gahan, Sean Doran, Daire Turner, Declan Kelly, Patrick Walsh, Conal Nolan, Sean McCabe, Larry Murphy(0-2), Foster Lacey(0-1), Ed Rowesome(0-5 frees), Brian O’Loughlin(0-1), Niall O’Loughlin(1-1), James Sweeney, David Breen(1-0), Niall Finn. Subs; Denis Walsh for C Nolan, Sean Roche for J Sweeney, James Donohoe for N Finn, Niall finn for B O’Loughlin.

Monageer/Boolavogue 0-16 Clongeen 3-12.
Our Intermediate hurlers went down to a strong Clongeen side in Saturdays Division 3 ACL game in Monageer. Fielding a depleted team due to a long injury list, our lads battled manfully and performed well in the difficult conditions. Clongeen got away to a good start and had 1-2 on the board early on but we gradually got to grips and at half time the score was 2-6 to 0-11 for the visitors. We had to face into a strong breeze in the second half and looked to be on target for victory until a defensive error handed Clongeen the points they hardly deserved. Best on the day were Liam Gahan, Niall O’Reilly and Conal Nolan in defence. Youngster James Walsh, making his debut at this level looks a real prospect at wing back. Mick Sweeney had a good outing at midfield while our fowards despite missing some guilt edged chances had impressive displays from Brian O’Loughlin John Ivory and James Gahan.
