  • Junior ‘A’ hurling Champions 2012

Monageer Boolavogue are the junior ‘a’ hurling champions for 2012 thanks to a three point win over Oulart the Ballagh, in a sunny St Patricks Park today. The drawn game was a low scoring affair and this replay was something similar with the final score being 1-09 to 0-09. Despite conceding the first score we started brightly taking a 3 points to one lead, with Ed Rowsome back on form with the frees, and a suberb score from Chris Daly. Oulart managed to get back into the game and we went in at half time level on 5 points each. A savage effort by all was the main reason we managed to outscore Oulart by 1-04 to 0-04 in the second half. James Gahan has to be given a mention for his outstanding effort, along with many others but Chris Daly was the outstanding back. An early score from John Ivory set us on our way in the second half, whilst Ed added more frees. At the other end Oulart were finding it difficult to get scores thanks to the dog ignorance of Daire Turner in particular. The introduction of Michael Ivory in the second half worked wonders as he scored the decisive goal within minutes of coming on. Another subsitute Adrian O Dowd scored the point to give us the three point lead with only injury time remaining. Our lads stood firm for the remaining minutes and secured a famous victory. Afterwards we were treated to a marvellous speech from our captain Daire Turner, which thankfully was in slightly better taste than the one he gave before the Buffer’s Alley match. He received the cup to great cheers and shouts from our large support, and one hopes that (in contrast to 2000) he will ensure that this time the cup will remain in one piece. On a more poignant note, it was perhaps fitting that we won our first county title in 10 years on this day, which is Shane Fenlon’s birthday. He was born on the day after we won our first intermediate title in 1980 and our lads had him looking down on us today.

Finally, well done lads on a great victory and lets hope that next year this team can establish themselves in the junior championship.

  • Junior hurling finals.

The junior a team drew with Oulart in the county final by 1-07 to 0-10. WE started the match well with Laurence murphy scoring inside the first two minutes but we only managed to add one more point in the first half which was a pointed free by Ed Rowsome. WE wasted a fair bit of possession and should have scored more in the first half. Our backs had the upper hand over the oulart forwards for most of the match. THe half time score was

0-02 to 0-05 in favour of Oulart, but this was when we were playing against a slight wind. WE were on top for most of the second half but again found it difficult to get the scores. A great point from James Gahan set us on our way in the second half and we drew level with two minutes to go. We missed two clear chances to take the lead, and the referee blew the game up a draw. It is unclear when the replay will be.

The junior ‘b’ team lost to Ballyhogue in the district final straight after the junior a. Our lads have put in a very good effort this year and our third team reached its first ever district final. Playing against Ballyhogues first team, and losing Adrian O Dowd to the second team and Miheal Somers to a hand injury meant that this was always going to be a hard one to win but the lads did themselves proud, and will surely be amongst the distrcit favourites next year.

team: Larry Carty, Anthony Dempsey, Declan Kelly, Martin Sweeney, Padraig Stafford, Barry Millar, Michael Stafford, Diarmaid Breen, James O Loughlin, Morgan Rowsome, Michael Ivory, Peadar Leacy, Ciaran Fenlon, Paul Farrington, Tomas O Leary. • Under 21 football

The under 21 footballers have qualified for the district final after beating Davidstown by 2-11 to 1-07 last night in St Patricks Park. We started well and soon had a 1-06 to 0-00 lead and went in at half time leading by 1-10 to 0-03, thanks to some good scores by James Gahan in particular. We never really got out of first gear in the first half and forgot to let of the handbrake for the second. We only managed to score 1-01 in the second half thanks to some woeful shooting by Sean Murphy in particular. We couldnt kick a point in the second half and had to make do with the fisted effort of Bryan Dwyer to record our first score of the half. Morgan Gahan scored a penalty with the last kick of the game.

Team: Sean McCabe, Peter Mernagh, Ray O Brien, Morgan Gahan, Niall O Reilly, Paul Gahan, Liam Gahan, Mark Walsh, Aidan Gahan, Mick Sweeney, Dean Fenlon, James Gahan, James Sweeney, Matthew Dunne, Sean Murphy Subs: Diarmaid Breen, Tomas O Leary, Patrick Walsh, Bryan Dwyer.

  • Junior ‘a’ hurling semi final report

    Monageer Boolavogue 4-12 Bunclody 1-07.

We are through to the junior a hurling final where we will face Oulart The Ballagh, after beating HWH Bunclody this evening in Farmleigh. We started well thanks to a brilliantly taken goal by John O Loughlin, but bunclody were finding the

scores easier to get, pulling level on 1-02 to 0-05. However we finished the first half strongly and went in at half time leading by 3-04 to 0-06, thanks to goals from John O Loughlin again and Ed Rowsome from a sideline ball. The secondhalf started in the worst possible way, with bunclody scoring a goal, but they didnt manage to score again from play for the remainder of the game. John O Loughlin scored his third goal of the match, and points were tagged on by Bryan Dwyer, John Ivory and James Gahan among others.

Team; 1. Morgan Gahan 2. Sean Doran 3. Daire Turner 4. Mick Nolan 5.

Denis Walsh 6. Chris Daly 7. Sean McCabe 8. Mick Sweeney 9. Damien Fenlon 10. Ed Rowsome 11. Bryan Dwyer 12. Patrick Walsh 13. James Gahan 14. John O Loughlin 15. John Ivory Subs: Laurence Murphy for Sean McCabe, Niall Finn for Ed Rowsome

  • Junior b district Finalists

There are many people who make the grade of Junior b sound even worse by calling it Junior ‘d’. This in fact is doing our lads a dis-service and they proved it with a brilliant second half display last night to reach the district final on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-07, despite trailing by two at half time. This is the first year i can remember the third team actually having collective training sessions other than those in the Harrow. Our lads have been training twice a week for a good while now, and they are seeing the benefits of it now. Sure its not that long ago when county teams didn’t even train twice a week.

I wasn’t at the game myself but i was told by many that our lads hurled the sh*te out of the Rapps in the second half. We had three additions to our team from the drawn game, Paul Farrington, James O Loughlin and Micheal Somers and surely they must have made a difference. The other semi final is on Thursday night between Ballyhogue and Rathnure. Our lads must be brimming with confidence now and will certainly not fear either team.

Team: 1. Larry Carty 2. Martin Sweeney 3. Declan Kelly 4. Anthony Dempsey 5. Padraig Stafford 6. Barry Miller 7. Michael Stafford 8. Diarmaid Breen 9. James O Loughlin 10. Peadar Leacy 11. Michael Ivory 12. Adrian O Dowd 13. Morgan Rowsome 14. Paul Farrington 15. Michéal Somers  Subs: John Murphy for Micheal Somers, Conor Doyle for Morgan Rowsome .

  • Harvest Ball Thank You

Thanks to all those who helped out at the Harvest ball, and also to those who attended in such good numbers, to make the evening a good one. Hopefully a good time was had by all and maybe this will be the first of many.

  • Junior Football v Tara Rocks

For the second time in three years our junior football team lost in the semi-finals of the championship. Final score was 3-07 to 0-15. Despite a terrible first half where we went in at the break trailing by 3-05 to 0-05 our lads showed great spirit and brilliant point taking to bring the game back to within a point. All on the sideline thought a goal was scored by the knee of bertie gahan close to the end to put us a point ahead but it went just inches wide.

    Team:

Colin Hawkins, Ger Daly, Chris Daly, Liam Gahan, Paul Gahan, Brian O Loughlin, Niall O Reilly, Stephen Murphy, Conall Nolan, Mick Sweeney, Marty Kelly, Damien Fenlon, James Sweeney, John O Loughlin, Bertie Gahan    Subs used: Paddy Breen, John Breen, Matthew Dunne, Sean Murphy

Scores: Marty Kelly 0-04, Damien Fenlon 0-03, James Sweeney 0-02, Paddy Breen 0-02, Conall Nolan 0-02, John Breen 0-01, Bertie Gahan 0-01

  • Junior ‘a’ Hurling quarter final vs Glynn-Barntown

The junior ‘a’ hurling team showed heart, fight, determination and desire on their way to winning this match on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-12 to reach the county semi final. In stark contrast to the previous days display our lads came back from being six points down to record the win. Points from James Gahan in particular in the first half meant that despite conceding a few sloppy scores we were only five points down at half time, which was a good scoreline considering how bad we hurled. Despite Glynn making the gap six points our lads fought hard and got our just rewards with a goal from John Ivory, which was added to with points from Ed Rowsome, John O Loughlin and Bryan Dwyer. When the final whistle sounded, for the second time this weekend Damien Fenlon celebrated like the All Ireland was won, which goes to show the passion that the team has. It is not decided who our next opponents will be but one thing for sure is our junior team will fight until the end.

Team: Morgan Gahan, Mick Nolan, Daire Turner, Sean Doran, Sean McCabe, Chris Daly, Mick Sweeney, Damien Fenlon, Laurence Murphy, Patrick Walsh, Bryan Dwyer, Ed Rowsome, John Ivory, John O Loughlin, James Gahan Subs: Denis Walsh for Laurence Murphy, Laurence Murphy for Patrick Walsh.

Scores: Ed Rowsome 0-05 (0-04 frees), John Ivory 1-02, James Gahan 0-03, Bryan Dwyer 0-01, Patrick Walsh 0-01, John O Loughlin 0-01

  • Intermediate hurling quarter final vs Marshelstown

The intermediate hurlers lost to Marshalstown yesterday by 3-17 to 3-09 in monamolin. We started poorly, and got progressively worse until a flurry of scores at the end made the scoreline look slightly less painful than it was in reality. Matthew Dunne was one of the very few in the first half who performed well, and deserved the two points he scored, for all the work he did. Despite our poor showing the half time score was 1-06 to 2-06 in favour of Marshalstown, with our goal being scored by Stephen Murphy. The second half started in terrible fashion from our point of view, when we conceded the first three scores of the game and then another srappy goal. The four subs made an impact when they came on and we managed to score two late goals and a few points but in truth Marshalstown were so much better than us on the day. Final score 3-17 to 3-09.

Team: 1. Sean Murphy 2. Ray O Brien 3. Brian O Loughlin 4. Paul Gahan 5. Mark Walsh 6. Tommy Breen 7. Dean Fenlon 8. Niall O Reilly 9. Bertie Gahan 10. Colm O Loughlin 11. Matthew Dunne 12. Niall O Loughlin 13. Marty Kelly 14. John Breen 15. Stephen Murphy

Subs: David Breen for Bertie Gahan, Paddy Breen for Tommy Breen, Peter Mernagh for Niall O Loughlin, Conall Nolan for Niall O Reilly

Scores: David Breen 1-01, Marty Kelly 1-01, Stephen Murphy 1-00, Peter Mernagh 0-02, Matthew Dunne 0-02, Niall O Loughlin 0-02, Dean Fenlon 0-01.

  • Junior ‘b’ hurling semi final vs Rapps

For the second week in a row in Patricks Park, the dedicated and loyal supporters of Monageer/ Boolavogue were treated to a hugely exciting, junior b match. Last week it was the footballers who were the talk of the parish, and tonight it was the turn of the hurlers. Trailing by 1-05 to 2-08, with only minutes to go we pulled it out of the fire again with a great late goal by Tomas O Leary, and three well taken points to leave the final score 2-08 to 2-08. There is definately something to be said for junior b under lights and if the GAA need any evidence of it then the last two weeks will prove it. Despite Damien Fenlon acting like a lunatic on the sideline our lads managed to keep their heads when the shit hit the fan. A display of high fielding similar to that of Ken McGrath was provided by Diarmaid Breen, but his striking would be considered poor, even at under 12 level. He would get my man of the match award though. Robert Rowsome has made nearly as many comebacks as Frank Sinatra at this stage and once again he was needed near the end to shore up the defence. A period of consulation with, and cursing at the referee ended in establishing that there was no extra time to be played at the end of this memorable draw.

Team: 1. Larry Carty 2. Martin Sweeney 3. Declan Kelly 4. Anthony Dempsey 5. Padraig Stafford 6. Barry Miller 7. Diarmaid Breen 8. Michéal Stafford 9. Peadar Lacey 10. Adrian O Dowd 11. Michael Ivory 12. Morgan Rowsome 13. Adrian O Loughlin 14. Ciaran Fenlon 15. John Murphy Subs: Tomas O Leary for John Murphy, Robert Rowsome for Adrian O Loughlin

Scores: Michael Ivory 1-03, Tomas O Leary 1-00, Morgan Rowsome 0-03, Adrian O Dowd 0-02
